The action unfolds in the Republic of Gilead, where the military is in power. The country has cruel rules and customs, only officers and their wives enjoy respect in society. But for unknown reasons, officers' wives do not have children. In order to continue the officer family, officers and their wives choose from among ordinary girls the one who will bear their future child. Young girls, carriers of officers' offspring, live in special facilities that resemble a prison, and they know that immediately after giving birth they will have to part with their children.
