Antoine Duanel is being demobilized "due to character instability". He meets Christina Darbon and falls in love with her. He changes several jobs and finally gets a job in a private detective agency. He is tasked with monitoring Madame Tabar, the wife of a suspicious shoe merchant. To Antoine, she seems to be the embodiment of his dreams. He writes her a love letter and she goes on a date.
